Lorenzen Throws 14th No-Hitter in Phillies HIstory

Philadelphia Phillies RHP Michael Lorenzen threw the 14th no-hitter in franchise history last night in a 7-0 victory over the Nationals. On the night, he allowed zero hits, struck out five, and walked four batters. An all around team defensive effort led by #22.

Lorenzen becomes one of three pitchers to throw for a no-hitter this season, joining Justin Verlander and Domingo German.

It seems like the value of a no-hitter might be decreasing, based on the record-setting nine we saw in 2021 (including combined), and four this season (again, including one combined from Detroit). In attempt to dissect the value of a no-hitter, I went back and crunched the numbers to try to come to terms of just how valuable a no-hitter is across the world of sports.

Since the first no-hitter was recorded way back in 1876 by George Bradley, there have been 322 recorded in MLB history. To break it down further, 302 have been done by a single pitcher (per MLB.com). That means in the 147 years of the MLB, there are about 2.2 no-hitters on average per year (2.05 individual).

Looking at the NBA, the equivalent of throwing a no-hitter in terms of points scored would be 56 in a single game. In 77 seasons of the NBA, we have seen 165 56-point games, averaging about 2.15 per season.

It was hard to calculate numbers for the NFL due to difficulty of finding the archives required, but we can assume it would average out to a QB throwing for around 460 yards give or take, which has only occurred 13 times over the last five seasons.

To tie a bow on this, throwing a no-hitter, either combined or individual, is a huge accomplishment that should not be taken lightly. Over 2,000 MLB games are played each season, one no-hitter accounts for well less than even a fraction of 1% of those games.
