USWNT Hangs On By A Post

The U.S. Women's National Team escaped with a 0-0 draw vs Portugal. The game came down to the final minutes with Portugal on the attack in extra time. A shot from the right boot of Portugal forward Andrea Faria rocketed towards the goal. The stop was made not by goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, but am unsuspected friend.

That's right, the game-drawing goal was sent away by the right goal post. At the end of the day, a draw isn't the worst thing in the world. In fact, to was all the USWNT needed to advance to the FIFA Women's World Cup Round of 16.

The drama comes due to the fact that they were such heavy favorites as back-to-back winners of the World Cup in 2015 and 2019. After opening up the group stage with a 3-0 victory against Vietnam, the USWNT jumped to +240 favorites to win it all. Since drawing the last two matches, the United States has dropped to just +430. This is the first time in USWNT history that the team failed to win at least two group cup games.

Regardless, the team didn't seem too phased by the draw, celebrating with the fans following the match this morning. These actions weren't what some were expecting after a what some what call embarrassing outing, and no seemed more displeased than former USWNT player Carli Lloyd.

At the end of the day, the USWNT is advancing which is the ultimate goal at every stage. Brandon and I dive more into the USWNT on 'In The Zone' on 96.9 The Game at 3 p.m.
