Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir "Vladdy " Guerrero Jr. took home the 2023 MLB Home Run Derby trophy last night, edging out Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena in the final round 25 to 23. This Derby set a number of all-time records in the MLB history books making a case to name the 2023 event one of the greatest in MLB history. Let's take a look at some reasons why.

Vladdy came into the event as one of the favorites to take home the trophy at +450 to win the Derby. However, this clearly wasn't when history was made. Vladdy's father, Vladimir Guerrero, won the MLB Derby back in 2007. The two mark the first father-son duo to ever win the Home Run Derby in MLB history. Pretty impressive statistic, but we saw history made elsewhere throughout the night as well.

The Derby was held at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, and Mariners outfielder Julio Rodriguez was feeling the love in front of his home crowd. After blasting and impressive 31 home runs in the opening round of the Derby, Rodriguez followed it up in the second round with 41 home runs - a new MLB record for most home runs hit in a single round (previously held by Vladdy (40) in 2019).

Prior to the night, there had only been five batters to hit 30+ home runs in single round. The runner-up last night in Arozarena joined that list with 35 in the second-round, extending the list to six. There have now been eight 30+ home run rounds in Derby History, with Rodriguez alone holding three of those. No other player has done it numerous times.
