Tuesday Top 5: Best Available Free-Agent Running Backs in the NFL

Time for my Tuesday Top 5, we’ve been talking about the big time deals going down today. QB’s like Rodgers getting paid, WR’s getting gobbled up by the franchise tag…but what about the most neglected position in the NFL these days?! The RB! Here are the top 5 RB’s entering the free-agent marketplace.

All 5 of these guys are unrestricted free-agents.

5- James Conner- Conner is only 26 years old, he’s coming off a pretty damn good season. 1,127 total yards, scored 18 touchdowns! He was a fantasy dynamo last year and he proved he could stay healthy for once, playing 15 of 17 regular season games. Edmonds is available too in free-agency, but Conner proved he’s the better of the two.

4- Cordarrelle Patterson- Patterson is everything an NFL RB should be in 2022. He’s a great WR, he can make plays, you can line him up anywhere, and he can make guys miss out of the backfield. How it took him / his coaches 9 years to figure this out is beyond me. If he wasn’t 30, he’d be higher on this list.

3- Melvin Gordon- Gordon split time with Javonte Williams last year in Denver, and while the youngster proved to back a more potent punch in the backfield, Gordon still has juice left. He’ll be turning 29 soon but there’s little sign of decline to this point. 514 snaps last year, over 1k total yards and double digit TD’s.

2- Rashaad Penny- Penny was once a 1st round pick, but since he’s was drafted in 2018, he either hasn’t shown he has it on the field, or the bigger issue – he’s been often injured. He tore his ACL in 2019, and finally he looks like the back he was coming out of San Diego State. Penny recorded 671 yards (7.3 YPC) and six rushing touchdowns over the final five games. That’s 134 yards and over 1 TD per game on average.

Number 1!- Leonard Fournette- Playoff Lenny! Say no more, he should be the highest paid back in NFL free-agency, he’s got all the tools, has really improved as a pass catcher, can obviously run guys over, and he’s right in the thick of his athletic prime @ 27 years old. Of all the free-agent backs, he’s the only one to eclipse 1,200 total yards last season.
