No Patriots Player Has Worn the No. 1 Under Bill Belichick...Until Now!

While at Auburn, Cam Newton wore No. 2 on his jersey. After being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, Cam wore the No. 1 throughout his entire career in Carolina.

No longer with the Panthers, Cam is set to join the New England Patriots and before ever stepping foot on the field, is doing something no other Patriots player has done during the Bill Belichick era. Cam will take his No. 1 jersey up to Foxborough.

In the history of the New England Patriots franchise, only three players have ever worn the No. 1 jersey and one of those three players only had it for one game.

Tony Franklin wore the No. 1 from 1984-1987 and was the kicker during the Patriots first trip to the Super Bowl in 1985. He was the most recent player to wear the jersey number. Before him, John Smith (another kicker) wore the No. 1 from 1974-1983.

The player to wear the No. 1 jersey for one game was Eric Shubert, who filled in for Franklin during a players strike in 1987.

There's some Patriots trivia for you and your friends.
