The Tampa Bay Rays (82-54) rallied to a dramatic 5-4, eleven inning win over the San Diego Padres (72-65) on Sunday afternoon at Tropicana Field. With the win, the Rays completed a three-game sweep over San Diego.
The Padres scored two in the fourth to get on the board first and built a 3-1 lead after eight innings. The Rays only run in the first eight innings came from a Junior Caminero solo homer in the fourth. Down to their final out in the bottom of the ninth, Jonny DeLuca hit a two run homer to left field to tie the game 3-3.
After a scoreless tenth inning, the Padres got a run in the top of the 11th to take a 4-3 lead. The Rays tied it in the bottom of the frame when Jonny DeLuca reached on a fielding error by shortstop Xander Bogaerts. Moments later Jorge Mateo hit a RBI single to give the Rays a 5-4, walk-off win.
Drew Rasmussen got the start and allowed two earned runs in his six innings of work on four hits while striking out six and walking two. Tyler Wells (3-2, 2.62) got the win out of the bullpen for the Rays after working the top of the eleventh inning.
The Rays look to carry on the momentum of this sweep when they host the New York Mets for a three-game series which begins on Monday night. Ian Seymour (9-5, 4.21) is scheduled to start for the Rays, while Robert Stock (0-3, 7.40) has been named the starter for New York.
