Rays Win Opener In New York

The Tampa Bay Rays (34-15) defeated the New York Yankees (30-22) 4-2 on Friday night at Yankee Stadium in New York. With the win, the Rays have now won five in a row and have a 5.5 game lead in the AL East - Tampa Bay has also won 22 of their last 26 games.

Austin Wells hit a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead. That would be the score until the eighth inning when the Rays offense came to life. Jonathan Aranda tied it with a RBI double, moments before Richie Palacios gave the Rays a 3-1 lead with a two-run single. Ryan Vilade added a sacrifice fly that gave the Rays a 4-1 lead. New York got one back in the bottom of the eighth to make it 4-2, which would prove to be the final score.

The Rays will look to make it six in a row when they meet the Yankees in the middle game of the three-game series on Saturday afternoon. First pitch Saturday is scheduled for 1:35 PM - Chris Adams-Wall begins pregame coverage at 1:00 PM on 95.7 WDAE & AM 620, your Home of Rays Baseball.
