Which Was Bigger: Michael Jordan the Player? Or the Brand?

Michael Jordan is arguably the greatest basketball player of all time. 6-time NBA Champion (in six appearances), 6-time Finals MVP, 5-time Regular Season MVP, 14-time All Star, I could go on and on. Wherever you rank him in your top-5, it is indisputable that he is one of the most influential individuals around the game of basketball. Ever.

Nonetheless, his greatness on the court may not be his most notable affair. The Air Jordan I shoes were released by Nike in April of 1985 - running you $65 dollars a pair. After young MJ took the league by storm, the Air Jordan did over $100 million in revenue by the end of the year. The Jordan Brand rose to the top as an entire clothing brand - one that turned into a $4.8 billion brand, averaging $400 million of revenue per year.

When matching such a dominant NBA player, with the one of the most most recognizable silhouettes in the world, it's difficult to choose which has made the bigger impact on the world in general. To dive in to this question - along with exclusive stories inside the world of one of the greatest athletes to ever live, Brandon was joined by Johnny Smith. Johnny is the author of 'Jumpman: The Making and Meaning of Michael Jordan'. Tune in to the podcast below to hear the full interview from earlier today on In The Zone.
