Cape Coral, FL - A 12-year-old student has been arrested after making threats of violence towards students and staff at a Southwest Florida middle school.
Cape Coral Police arrested 12-year-old A’Niyah Harris after Harris posted a Snapchat on September 20th showing a light-colored “machine-gun” style weapon with the caption “imma shoot up the school tmr”.
A teacher at Diplomat Middle School became aware of the Snapchat and notified the School Resource Officer, who contact police.
While being questioned by investigators, Harris admitting to sending the photo but told officers the threats were a joke, and that the gun shown in the photo was a fake "blaster" gun and was broken.
Brandon Sancho, public affairs officer with the Cape Coral Police Department, tells NBC 2 News "these are not jokes at all. If you make any threat like this, you’re going to be arrested."
Police confirmed the gun in the photo was a SplatRBall gel blaster gun that was broken.
Harris was arrested and charged with written or electronic threats to kill or conduct a mass shooting.
