Why the Lakers Have an 'Anthony Davis' Problem

Colin Cowherd: “In baseball, if you have great stuff, you’re an ace, regardless of your personality. You take the ball, you control the pace of the game, you control virtually everything. But it’s different in basketball – teammates, passing, playing both ends of the floor – so many things that matter. A general manager once told me it’s not about getting a franchise player, it’s about getting the ‘right’ one. Talent alone doesn’t make you a one. The Knicks thought Carmelo Anthony was and he wasn’t. He wasn’t going to commit physically on the defensive end, he wasn’t a grinder, and that’s Anthony Davis. He’s not physically dependable and he doesn’t elevate others, he’s just really talented. Right now in the NBA, we have three great players: Kawhi Leonard, James Harden, and Anthony Davis, and they are ones in talent but twos. Anthony Davis is not a grinder. Your best player – Michael Jordan, Tim Duncan, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, Magic Johnson – have to be your hardest workers and your most focused basketball players. They have to be willful, driven and elevate others. Anthony is just ‘talented’. You gotta have some ‘dog’, some ‘alpha’, you gotta be the first in the weight room and the last out, and this is the Lakers’ issue. Last year AD showed up out of shape and pissed LeBron off. Anthony Davis should be a top 3 big but he wants to shoot jumpers, and he’s shooting like 19% this year. Basketball’s culture doesn’t do a great job at developing leaders it does a great job of developing basketball players. Football’s culture does a better job at developing leaders… The Lakers have an issue, they thought they were getting a ‘one’ and what they got was a ‘two’, and LeBron is 37 years old. The Lakers have to find their next Kobe, Magic, or Shaq; their ONE. They make fun of Anthony Davis’ ‘dad bod’, he doesn’t want to work out and put time in the weight room.” (Full Video Above)

Listen to Colin Cowherd explain why the middling Lakers have an ‘Anthony Davis’ problem, as Colin thinks Davis is not equipped enough as a leader to carry a Lakers team that can’t be fully propelled by a 37-year-old LeBron James who has seemingly begun to degrade physically.
