You ready...Wild trade idea! Except, honestly, I don't think it's that crazy.
I think it's pretty obvious the Magic (old regime and new) are not completely sold on Elfrid Payton as the point guard of the future for Orlando. They could certainly fill that void at #6 in this year's draft, but there's a chance they go with a Lauri Markkanen, Malik Monk, or Jayson Tatum, none of which play PG..
Marcus Smart is a hard nosed, tough, gritty back up for the Boston Celtics, whose talents have been on full display since Isaiah Thomas had to exit the Eastern Conference Finals with a hip injury. The Magic could use his intensity in their otherwise passive starting lineup. Both Isaiah Thomas and Marcus Smart have big pay days coming their way in a couple of seasons and they won't pay both of them. Plus! The Celts hold the first overall draft pick, and most people have them taking Markelle Fultz out of Washington, also a point guard. Sounds like a surplus to me...
Here's where the Magic come into play.
The Magic could help the Celtics out with their front court issues by trading away Nik Vucevic. Add to that Elfrid Payton for back up purposes, and the 25th overall pick in this year's draft, and boom, there's your offer.
Magic give up: Vuc, Payton, and 25 overall.
Celtics give up: Marcus Smart.
I love it, do you?
