The Indianapolis Colts announced earlier today that 4th overall pick QB Anthony Richardson will start. Brandon and I don't see how they couldn't.
When an organization has as a top four pick in the NFL draft, 9/10 times the quarterback is a major hole in the offense per my math. Look at the teams drafting in the top four of the 2023 draft and their quarterback(s) from last season:
1) Carolina Panthers: Baker Mayfield, P.J. Walker, Sam Darnold
2 & 3) Houston Texans: Davis Mills
4) Indianapolis Colts: Matt Ryan, Sam Ehlinger, Nick Foles
All of these teams were in need of a franchise quarterback, and all of them went and got a quarterback with major upside and potential.
Anthony Richardson's competition for the starting job this season is Gardner Minshew, who seems destined to be a backup quarterback in the league. Brandon and I got into detail about why you should always start rookie quarterbacks week one if you use a top five pick on them in the segment below.
