Is Pac-12 in Jeopardy of Losing Automatic CFP Spot?

The College Football Playoffs is expanding beyond four teams after the 2023-2024 season, turning it into a 12-team bracket. The CFP committee came to the conclusion it would follow these guidelines to determine which teams would be selected:

  • Six highest-ranked conference champions determined by CFP committee will receive automatic bids.
  • Four highest-ranked conference champions determined by CFP committee will receive byes into quarterfinals.
  • The 6-12 spots will be filled by at-large selection.

The Pac-12 has gotten considerably weaker over the last couple of weeks, losing schools such as Colorado, Oregon, USC, UCLA, and Washington to various conferences. There are also reports that Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah will all join the Big 12 pending approval over the next 24 hours.

This leaves California, Oregon State, Stanford, and Washington State as the final universities remaining in the Pac-12. There are reports that the Pac-12 presidents plan to try to rebuild the conference, adding various schools such as Boise State, San Diego State, SMU, Tulane, and Utah State. Even still, you cannot possibly still consider the Pac-12 a Power 5 conference.

So how will the committee adjust to this? You could potentially open up more at-large bids to conferences such as the Big Ten, Big 12, and SEC who all are made up of at least 16 universities. The Pac-12 could dissolve completely and the remaining teams could join a major conference or join a mid-major. Theres also the chance that the Pac-12 adds new schools and stays alive, only to fall outside of a top 6 conference in the eyes of the CFP Committee.

A lot of different outcomes in this madness, and Brandon and I broke it all down on Friday during In The Zone. Check out the segment below!
