$99.2 million. That's the dead cap number for QB Tua Tagovailoa that the Dolphins will take on after cutting him with a post-June 1 designation. $67.4 million dead hit will be this year with the remaining $31.8 million happening in 2027.
The Dolphins aren't going to be good this year. They traded Minkah Fitzpatrick for a 7th round pick, released Tyreek Hill, and fired Mike McDaniel. The team is in rebuild mode with only Quinn Ewers and Cam Miller as the active quarterbacks.
Why not wait until next year to cut Tua? The draft doesn't appear to have the next fix for the Dolphins, it wouldn't make sense to sign someone (even in a weak free agency class like this one) to a long-term deal, and you're not trying to win a lot of games this year anyways, even with a new head coach and GM. Time will tell what the future has in store for the Dolphins, but right now, it doesn't look good down south.
