TAMPA -- The Florida Highway Patrol has closed the Howard Frankland and Sunshine Skyway Bridges because of high winds tied to Hurricane Helene.
FHP spokesperson Sgt. Steve Gaskins says wind gusts have reached 60 miles per hour on the bridge. High winds and storm surge are starting to cover the HFB between Tampa and St. Petersburg, particularly the lower eastbound span. FHP is asking motorists to use alternate routes, but don't drive unless absolutely necessary and don not drive through flooded streets.
