Marc Daniels Friday Notes Column: LeBron, Johnny Football And The USFL

Los Angeles Lakers v Phoenix Suns - Game Five

The Lakers won as many playoff series as the Magic. And I believe Anthony Davis will be out with an injury when Space Jam 2 premieres...Johnny Manziel hopped on a Barstool podcast and talked about taking money for his autograph while still playing at Texas A&M. If you are shocked with his revelation then you are alone. But Manziel has become a punchline. He went from one of the most exciting players in college football to a failed NFL quarterback to one of those characters you are likely to see on an MTV reality show, which I am guessing Manziel would do if it pays. While Manziel thinks it cool to "hang out with the boys" and giggle about taking money for his signature, he fails to realize how far he has fallen. He may have plenty of money from being "Johnny Football" but he's reduced to hoping for an invite to one of the Paul brother's fights and walk out another washed up former star...The Florida Cup will bring some of the biggest brands in world soccer to Orlando next month. The four-team event features Arsenal and Everton from England, Inter Milan from Italy and Millionarios from Columbia. It's a big deal to land those clubs and another shot in the arm for a city that might be a longshot to land a spot among World Cup host cities in 2026 but this event will go a long way in shrinking those odds. I still think Miami and Orlando will land host spots in 2026...Who turns down a warm soft chocolate chip cookie?...I am not convinced Duke will remain a power with Coach K retiring. Ask Indiana what life has been like since Bobby Knight left. Yes, Knight needed to go and the Hoosiers have had some decent seasons, but they have not been a perennial power for years. UCLA has gone through the same for decades after John Wooden. My guess is Duke will be among the better programs in the ACC, but the Coach K magic might be tough to duplicate and the awe of playing the Dukies won't be the same... Pineapple is underrated when it comes to ranking fruit and if you buy pineapple in a can, we can't be friends...Now that recruits are allowed back on campus, every college football program is landing every player. It is amazing how the recruiting world has changed and what schools are doing to get players to visit and what they do when they get to campus. The bells and whistles are off the chart and if the numbers tell us anything, 40% of all the recruits will leave within three years for another school...While Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit is soon to be DQ'd for a second positive test, Saturday's Belmont Stakes is actually a really good race. There are five legitimate contenders for what should be a competitive race. We will pick Essential Quality to come across the line first...I like using the squeegee while filling up my gas tank and cleaning my windows. It's fun...MLB says they are serious about penalties for pitchers who are using substances on baseballs. The 90s saw batters use steroids to abuse pitchers and now pitchers have found their poison to get even. Still not sure how they nail pitchers when several people can touch a baseball before it's tossed...I found an old baseball glove in my garage the other day. It smelled great and dripped with memories...
