High School Esports Start Up Receives $15 Million in Investments

An esports start-up that supports the high school competitive scene, PlayVS, has received $15 million in investments from major investors.

Investors included are the San Francisco 49ers, rapper Nas, Twitch co-founder Kevin Lin, the Los Angeles Chargers’ Russell Okung, NBA's Baron Davis, the New York Jets’ Kelvin Beachum, and other venture capital groups.

The purpose of PlayVS is to send kids to college by implementing esports into high schools. CEO and Founder Delane Parnell emphasized the good that this investment can do, especially for low-income schools in a press release.

In an interview with Polygon:

“There’s 8 million kids today who don’t play high school sports,” Parnell said. “One thing they’d be interested in — at least a few million of these kids — would be participating in structured, organized esports."
