This is a tough one. As the Magic embark on a journey to find their next coach, one of the names already throw around by fans and media alike, is Becky Hammon. Hammon is a decorated assistant coach for Gregg Popovich and the Spurs (has been for 4 years), she played in the WNBA, and has turned down a few college jobs to stay on her path to becoming the first ever woman to be the head coach of an NBA team. The Magic would be fools not to at least bring her name up in a board room meeting when discussing potential interview candidates.
As Pop said to the media a while back, it's going to take a team with guts, a team that's willing to step outside of the norm. Should the Magic be that team? As Bianchi wrote in his column this weekend "the status quo obviously isn’t working (for the Magic)" -- Do the Magic dare to be different?
Below, you have 4 options to choose from on this very question:
- The Magic should hire her because of her credentials as a coach in the NBA, gender aside.
- The Magic should hire her to make history, dare to be different, and break away from the norm.
- The Magic shouldn't hire her, simply because the NBA isn't ready, and a team is unlikely to respond to a female head coach.
- The Magic shouldn't hire her, because she'd be set-up to fail, coaching one of the worst rosters in the NBA. And could possibly set women coaching in the NBA back another 10 years.
