The Los Angeles Chargers and quarterback Justin Herbert have agreed to a five-year $262.5 million dollar deal to remain with the organization through 2029.
Herbert is entering his fourth year in the NFL after being selected with the No. 6 pick back in 2020. The Oregon quarterback hit the ground running in the league, being named starter from day one and racking up honors such as Offensive Rookie of the Year and one Pro Bowl selection. In addition to his individual success, the team has experienced decent success since Herbert entered the league. Over the last three seasons, the Chargers are 25-24 with Herbert under center, including a playoff appearance last season.
The money is well deserving based on the projected success of the 25-year old. Herbert has alreayd Herbert has already scratched the record book through his first three seasons in the league with some eye-popping numbers. 14,089 passing yards, 102 total touchdowns, and 22 games with 300+ passing yards all rank first amongst quarterbacks through their first three seasons. Plus, his 94 passing touchdowns ranks second behind just Dan Marino (98).
Herbert’s contract makes him the highest paid player in the league based on average annual salary ($52.5 million). He joins Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, and Aaron Rodgers as the only players in the league making north of $50 million per year.
Last season, Herbert threw for 4,739 passing yards (2nd), 25 touchdowns (tied 6th), and despite his middle-of-the-pack 10 interceptions, he had an INT% of 1.4% (7th).
