Desmond Howard is a very good and passionate commentator for ESPN, but his recent rant about Nebraska was misplaced. Here was his rant from Get Up:
Strong, harsh words from the Michigan alum. Here's the problem, the University of Nebraska has never publicly said that they wanted to leave the Big Ten. In their official statement about the Big Ten canceling football in the fall, Nebraska said, "We are very disappointed in the decision by the Big Ten Conference to postpone the fall football season, as we have been and continue to be ready to play.
Safety comes first. Based on the conversations with our medical experts, we continue to strongly believe the absolute safest place for our student athletes is within the rigorous safety protocols, testing procedures, and the structure and support provided by Husker Athletics.
We will continue to consult with medical experts and evaluate the situation as it emerges. We hope it may be possible for our student athletes to have the opportunity to compete."
That statement was signed by Chancellor Ronnie Green, Systems President Ted Carter, AD Bill Moos, and Coach Scott Frost. Where in that statement did Nebraska say they wanted to leave the Big Ten? Nowhere. They said that they were "very disappointed" and "We hope it may be possible for our student athletes to have the opportunity to compete."
Desmond Howard is not upset with the University of Nebraska, he's upset with the memes and internet ramblings of fans. Husker fans on all platforms have been making jokes and comments about leaving the Big Ten for their old conference, the Big 12.
So Desmond Howard and the Big Ten Commissioner are mad that the Huskers have a different opinion and how their fans have reacted to this news. That's what this boils down to. They needed a bad guy and they found a target in Nebraska, one of the safest states in the country in terms of the coronavirus. Interesting.
